I forgot to put this up last night. I'm gonna try to cluster these things better in the future, so I'm not updating for every little sketch. This got me thinking, does anyone else have a hard time seeing Topher Grace as Venom? I'm leaving judgement until I see the movie, but he's always been the epitome of "scrawny kid" to me. Hell, he would have made a pretty good Peter Parker.

Actually, Topher would have made a GREAT Peter Parker...

Exactly. He would have had the witty banter down cold. I don't dislike Tobey Maguire, but it seems Topher barely missed the role he was born to play.

My logic on this one (though I haven't read the comics, haven't seen the tv shows, and haven't seen the movies, so all I know is from hearsay) is that Venom is, in some ways, a lot like Spiderman, which is the reason why they are arch-menses. Thus, it would fit to cast for the role of Venom an actor who is a lot like Spiderman's actor.
But that's just my outside-the-world-of-comics logic. Though come to think of it, that's probably the same thought process that led the studio to the decision in the first place.

my only complaint is that it is "Arch-nemesi" [I think that's plural for arch-nemesis.] but that makes perfect sense.

Well. I don't know if you wanted to hear any of this, and you totally don't have to read it if you don't care at all, BUT, Venom isn't so much a person as it is alien goo that gloms onto a host, making said host more powerful, and eventually, taking over.

Right. I sort of knew that. I guess I was referring more to the person than the symbiote, but that's probably obvious from context.

Tobey's just too subdued. I always saw Peter Parker/Spider Man as a wise-cracking smart-aleck; Topher Grace would have been perfect!

Tobey on the other hand always seems to be channelling Stephen Root's character from Office Space.

Heh heh, that's the best thing ever. I'd never heard of this sandman fellow until the new villain rumours started up. I'm sure he's very evil and scary, but I just can't see it. Is there really enough sand in the middle of New York for him to use?

Wellll... He's not really made out of sand. It's similar, but it's some sort of biological substance. At least that's what Ultimate Spiderman says.

The worst part is, the guys that made the Sandman used a criminal PSYCOPATH as their subject. Wonderful.

Thanks, illegal scientists.

Goddamn. That drawin's shweet.

Honestly, I'd prefer some big tough douchebag looking guy to play Venom. But Eric from That 70's Show? C'mon.

I'm also kind of...iffy on Topher as Eddie Brock...but I think, in a small way, he was a bit more based on the Ultimate version...where he was just a few years older the Peter, and not NEARLY as big.

Haha, that is such a typical Rob thing to do. Almost everything you could ever need to know about Rob is contained in that picture.

Which is pretty good for you guys, since you've got me feeling I know a fictional character so well. Well done, keep up the awesome comic!

I can see Topher doing a really good crazed, jealous guy. Honestly, I think he would've made a much better Carnage than Venom, but I like him as an actor so I'm willing to reserve judgment until I see the film. Maybe he's put on muscle?

Also, am I the only one who thinks Laura Prepon should've played Mary Jane? Kirsten Dunst is ALL WRONG for the film; she should've been Gwen Stacey.

I would've paid to see her get her neck snapped multiple times.

Isn't Laura all blonde now? I also heard she's rather tall, and Tobey is short..I think? I could be wrong.

Well, she's blonde NOW. But she wasn't when they started filming the Spider Man series...And you can creatively film around the height disparity; it's done for Tom Cruise and Elijah Wood all the time.

I don't know who Venom is, but Topher Grace has about the dumbest got-damn name in show biz. It's like, hmm, my name is Christopher... how can I shorten it without going with the more conventional Chris? I've got it! I'll call myself the even-more sexually ambiguous Topher.

Anyone whose name rhymes with "gopher" doesn't get to play superheroes or villains. I just made that rule up.

As for the guy here who mentioned Rollins -- I agree, he'd be a fucken AWESOME villain in anything. But you're wrong about him needing work: he's got a show coming up on IFC (or Sundance?) soon, he publishes books and has a record label, and does quite well with his spoken-word tours. His music blows chunks, but I always thought Rollins was an intriguing figure with a lot of interesting perspectives.

The way I see it, they're probably going to be going for a disparity between Venom as a villain, and Venom as a human - so you can really see how much the symbiote does change him. It's like an evil Superman with a mild-mannered alter-ego.

Of course, Topher playing Venom has not, as far as I know, been confirmed. For all we know, Topher is playing a different villain, and the black suit is being used to set-up Venom as a villain in Spider-man 4.

There's a pic of spidey in the black suit here:
http://spiderman.sonypictures.com/
I doubt they'd do a movie with Spidey in the black suit without introducing Venom. Otherwise, the movie would have to end on a something of a cliffhanger. It's not official, but it's pretty much understood that Venom will be in the next movie.

Don't you remember the cliffhanger at the end of the last one?

'Harry discovered the GOBLIN SUIT!! OH, what next?!'

I don't think they'd be particularly opposed to ending it on a cliffhanger. But yeah, I do admit it is pretty much confirmed, and when they finally admit it everyone will be 'Well, duh!'. I just like testing the hypotheticals, cause if they turn out right, I can claim to be prophetic and smart.

Oh and also, you have to give Sam Raimi some credit for casting villains. I mean, when fanboys were casting Green Goblin and Doc Ock in their fantasies, betcha no-one thought "Tony-award winning Alfred Molina would make a GREAT Doctor Octopus". It worked though.

Topher reminds me of a young Jonathan Pryce and that guy can do anything... um, ok, so maybe he's not really like Jonathan Pryce as an actor, but they look similar... to me. Go Topher!
